About "Wendy the Welder"
Wendy
11,000 women worked on Mare Island building ships for the Navy during the Second World War.
I have created a small clay maquette of Wendy the Welder inspired by a photograph of women working on the Nereus, a submarine tender, at the Mare Island Shipyard.

Imagine this strong woman greeting passengers exiting the ferry on Mare Island! Passengers will know at a glance that Mare Island has a proud history, and that history includes women like Wendy, who too often have been ignored.

I recruited three of my friends to be models for her, including Mara holding an authentic welding helmet used and personalized by a woman welder on Mare Island.

The location I am visualizing for this monumental bronze sculpture is where the ferry docks on Mare Island.

We would like the Mare Island Company and The City of Vallejo to recognize what these women did for our country, but also to honor the maritime history of Vallejo!

I am seeking support to make this monumental bronze sculpture of “Wendy the Welder” a reality.
